International Water Research Institute (IWRI)

Position Title: Computing and Data Scientist (Open rank Engineer)

Description:

The International Water Research Institute (IWRI) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for Engineer position specialized in Numerical Computing and/or Data Science. IWRI-UM6P is implementing, in partnership with Ecole Polytechnique (the X, France) and LMD, a climate modeling project with the objective of developing a “North African” version of the coupled atmosphere (LMDZ) and land-surface (ORCHIDEE) components of the IPSL-Climate Model to improve the simulation of the regional climate of this part of Africa.

The successful candidate is expected to analyze climate model outputs, contribute to the numerical development of the model, and develop a specific configuration for simulating the North African and Moroccan climate. He/she will help implementing and maintaining successive versions of the model and work with the UM6P modeling team.

Key duties:

The work to be performed will include:

  • Develop test, analysis, and visualizing tools.
  • Run the model on the UM6P supercomputer.
  • Contribute to the modernization of the model and the integration of new developments.
  • Develop advanced numerical simulation codes.
  • Provide support to other researchers and engineers to help solve numerical and IT related technical problems.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and scientists in the UM6P-IWRI and partner institutions to ensure adequate achievements.
  • Drafting documentation related to model packages and use

About IWRI:

IWRI, the International Water Research Institute of UM6P is located in Benguerir (Morocco) and it is dedicated to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary education and research around water and climate. The objectives are to conduct innovative research where local themes are connected to global issues of water and climate, with a focus on:

  • Integrated Water Resources Management
  • Development of water related technologies (irrigation, water supply and sanitation, desalination, demineralization, treatment, and recycling for water reuse)

Profile recherché

Criteria of the candidate:

Engineer or equivalent in high performance computing and numerical methods, data science, weather and/or climate science, or related disciplines.

Skills:

We are searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate, who should have:

  • Excellent programming skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of statistics.
  • Solid knowledge of high-level computer and programming languages (i.e., FORTRAN, C/C++), UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash, Python, …).
  • knowledge of climate model data formats (NetCDF and GRIB file formats)
  • knowledge and experience in numerical weather and/or climate modeling is an asset
  • Knowledge of model evaluation methods and tools.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Fluency in written and spoken French and English.
  • Ability to work in collaboration and in a team.
  • Autonomy and quick learning ability.
  • Ability to travel for missions outside Morocco.
