Area of specialization:

The incumbent will join the Chair of Soil Science whose responsibility is to develop and conduct a research program in Soil science aiming to bring the scientific knowledge to understand the complexity nature of our soils and to support the green transition in Africa. The successful candidate should have a wide range of expertise, mainly in soil and plant science, and have experience working in a laboratory setting.

Job description:

The Chair of Soil Science at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for a full-time position as a Laboratory Technician.

In consultation with the Senior Laboratory Technician, the successful applicant will work across both the Environmental Biogeochemistry Lab and the Fertilizer Ideation Lab to:

• Assist with sample analyses (including but not limited to soil, plant, and other organic matter). Activities will also include but are not limited to weighing and grinding samples and sample preparation for analysis, data entry, elaboration of reports and collecting additional soil samples and data as required.
• Support and assist the user community including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in laboratory analyses, sample preparation, and the correct use of laboratory equipment and facilities.
• Assist in developing analytical protocols for sample analyses in consultation with Laboratory head, and other subject matter specialists.
• Ensure quality and confidentiality of client and laboratory information and take an active role in updating the system.
• Assess and handle periodical maintenance of laboratory instruments.
• Promote responsibility, good work habits and a positive work environment.
• Clean and organize, and arrange the safe storage of samples, chemicals, and equipment.
• Communicate storage and product needs. Assists with monitoring and tracking the use of equipment, chemicals, and consumables.
• Support and collect data as directed by laboratory and project leaders.
• Assist with organization of laboratory tours and any educational activities.

The successful candidate should have a fundamental working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures related to laboratory work in soil science, and the ability to apply this knowledge in a variety of situations. It is essential to be able to communicate clearly to a variety of people, in English, and give instruction or support as needed.

Key duties:

Primary duties and responsibilities:

• Laboratory testing of soil, plant, water, fertilizer, and organic material, as well as any other analyses required
• Laboratory cleaning and organization
• Data collection and reporting
• Adhering strictly to all laboratory policies, protocols, and procedures
• Support the Senior Laboratory Technician and the user community
• Maintain high standards for safety when using or storing equipment, consumables, and chemicals
• Maintain high standards for quality

Criteria of the candidate:

• Bachelor's Degree – Laboratory technician, Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Soil Science, or related discipline.
• At least 2 years of experience within the above-mentioned subjects in a laboratory setting
• Excellent communication skills (French and English) in written and verbal form
• Good knowledge of laboratory hygiene, safety techniques, and inventory management
• Great organizational skills
• Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.)
• Proactive, ethical, and respectful
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
• Maintains positive attitude in fast-paced changing environments
