Title

Synthesis and characterization of new organic ligands based on aza-heterocycles used in the synthesis of new hybrid systems: Adsorption of pharmaceutical products in water

About CBS

The department Chemical & Biochemical Sciences. Green Process Engineering (CBS) is a component of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). The main objective of CBS is to set up an original research-teaching program, of international level, to meet the challenges of UM6P in terms of research and teaching, in particular in chemistry and green processes with an environmental and sustainable impact. CBS is interested in all aspects of chemical, biochemical, and green process engineering. Research at CBS is organized around several major areas, which aim to answer relevant industrial questions, to implement nationally adaptable solutions to support the Moroccan industry and economy and its independence. The CBS projects aim at understanding in depth the molecular mechanisms of all transformations to propose new original alternatives in terms of efficiency, environmental impact and sustainability.

Description of the internship

Despite their significant effects in global scientific and technological progress, which has increased life expectancy, cured millions of people of life-threatening diseases and improved living standards, pharmaceuticals are today considered to be rapidly growing environmental pollutants. Over the past three decades, pharmaceutical contaminants have been found in almost every ecological matrix on every continent. This includes effluents and influents from groundwater, surface water and sludge. Hybrid compounds are materials with both an organic and an inorganic part, which are attracting more and more attention due to their unique architecture, physicochemical properties and high adsorption performance. They seem to be a solution in the adsorption of these pharmaceutical contaminants. Recently, several hybrid compounds have been studied in many applications such as energy storage, gas purification, gas storage, gas separation and environmental remediation. Among all these applications, hybrid compounds are widely used in the removal of contaminants from urban waters.

Therefore, the synthesis of new hybrid systems will be performed via innovative strategies and their adsorption capacity will also be evaluated. All synthesized compounds will be characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, MS, IR and XRD.

Applications and selection procedures

Candidate profile

The candidate will be involved in the design, synthesis, purification, and characterization (HPLC, LC-MS, IR) of the different synthesized molecules. He/she should have a strong background in organic chemistry and should be interested in a multidisciplinary subject involving the development of methodologies in green chemistry and processes. A Master's degree in organic chemistry would be appreciated as he/she will have to demonstrate his/her ability to understand the entire subject.
