Job description:

The African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute (ASARI) of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Laayoune City is seeking applications for for a Research Engineer in the field of Water Desalination Technologies/Engineering to be an active member in the construction of its water management research program. Desalination of seawater and waste-water treatment/valorization are the key components to combat the effect of climate change and prevent desertification n the of South of Morocco. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative applicant who will develop research programs and projects in sea/brackish water desalination and treatment/valorization of conventional and unconventional water resources. We especially welcome applicants with specific knowledge in the disciplines of Water Desalination Technology, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline. The selected Fellow will work in close collaboration with the program of water, energy, environment, and agriculture at ASARI/UM6P Laayoune and its ecosystem and with other academic and industrial partners under the framwork of the Energy-Water-Food Nexus.

Role of the candidate:

  • Contribute in the establishment of a sound science and technology, research program, and strategies within the water management program
  • Contribute in the development of innovative and detailed research goals and project proposals in the area of water desalination to develop new, low-cost, and scalable water desalination plants of seawater as well as unconventional water treatment and valorization appropriate for the Southern region of Morocco
  • Contribute to the development of advanced low-cost desalination technologies via conceptualizing, designing, building, testing, and manufacturing scalable new materials/plants and separation devices using efficient energy sources and ecofriendly products
  • Work in collaboration with the scientists from energy, agriculture, environment, chemistry, and engineering background for strengthening the water-energy-climate-agriculture nexus
  • Contribute to the development of education teaching programs, especially in the field of sea water desalination and wastewater treatment for UM6P-Laayoune and its ecosystem.
  • Work with a diverse population of students at the undergraduate and Masters levels and to supervise postdocs and PhD students.
  • Publish research in high impact factor journals and attend national/international conferences.
Profile recherché

Criteria of the candidate:

  • Engineer Degree or a PhD in Water Technology Engineering (sea water desalination and waste-water treatment) or related discipline
  • Relevant hands-on experience in the subject discipline (designing and conducting experiments and piloting desalination prototypes) at a well-known university or industry
  • Knowledge and technical skill in the related discipline such as Water Technology Engineering, Membrane Separation, Reverse Osmosis, Water Chemistry for desalination, Hydraulic Engineering, Water Environmental Engineering or other advanced process of desalination and wastewater treatment
  • Expertise with the functioning of seawater desalination plants
  • Proven ability to perform multidisciplinary research and contribute to funded research programs
  • Demonstrated understanding of operational requirements for a successful research project and managing time and resources.
  • Ability to generate new ideas, links, and to build upon existing ideas to generate good concepts and solutions.
  • Proven ability to fulfil the academic writing requirements for development of proposal, reports, and scientific publications.
  • Good English communication skills, both verbal and writing are important.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and to work independently.
  • Fluency in French and/or Arabic will have additional advantage
