Project Background

Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say) is a destructive insect pest in most wheat growing regions. In Morocco, this insect causes around 35% wheat yield losses during dry years. The most effective management option for controlling Hessian fly is the use of resistant wheat cultivars carrying specific resistance genes. Previously, studies by ICARDA/UM6P have identified multiple wheat accessions that are resistant to Hessian fly. Furthermore, the resistance was shown to stem from a Triticum araraticum introgression on chromosome 6B.

The candidate of this PhD position will work on the further characterization of the described Hessian fly resistance gene. The candidate will work on the further fine-mapping of the loci, using genotypic and next-generation sequencing data. Furthermore, the candidate will use multiple laboratories and field based techniques to further study the expression and function of candidate genes, as well as their proteins. The aim of this project will be to identify the gene of interest and discover novel biological insight about the mechanisms involved in hessian fly resistance.

Key duties:

The PhD will be expected to:

  • Conduct research as part of the project team
  • Characterization of Hessian fly resistance gene
  • Conduct fine-mapping of the loci, using genotypic and next-generation sequencing data.
  • Understanding of mechanisms involved in hessian fly resistance.
  • Publish in high impact journals in the field.
